The tiny church tucked away in the hills about a mile outside Ruthin is thought to have its origins as a monastic community, possibly founded by the monks of Searan from Llanynys. The first record of the church is from 1253 alluding to it having been built on the site of an older site referred to as a “llan”, perhaps as a monastery, ministry, or hermitage.
Walking through the ancient entrance door, with (probably) 16th-century fittings, the English-Gothic east window (1290-1350), reglazed in 1984 by specialists from Ruthin Craft Centre, immediately draws the eye. This tiny church is packed with tresures that speak of the story of faith and the history of this land. Inside are the remains of very precious early wall paintings, interesting memorials, and a unique wooden font.
Tucked under a bench near the font is a peculiar rounded stone, called the Maen Camp. The stone formed part of the annual village fair on St Michael’s Day (29 September), when a contestant would try to throw the stone backwards over their heads to see who would take the title of village champion. An old tradition revived as part of the celebration of church’s patron.
Credir bod yr eglwys fach sydd wedi’i chuddio yn y bryniau tua milltir y tu allan i Rhuthun yn gymuned fynachaidd, a sefydlwyd o bosibl gan fynachod Searan o Llanynys . Mae cofnod cyntaf yr eglwys o 1253 yn cyfeirio iddi gael ei hadeiladu ar safle safle hŷn y cyfeirir ato fel “llan”, efallai fel mynachlog, gweinidogaeth neu meudwy.
Mae cerdded trwy’r drws mynediad hynafol, gyda ffitiadau o’r 16eg ganrif (mae’n debyg), y ffenestr ddwyreiniol Saesneg-Gothig (1290-1350), a ail-enwwyd ym 1984 gan arbenigwyr o Ganolfan Grefftau Rhuthun, yn tynnu’r llygad ar unwaith. Mae’r eglwys fach hon yn llawn dopau sy’n siarad am stori ffydd a hanes y wlad hon. Y tu mewn mae olion paentiadau wal gynnar gwerthfawr iawn, cofebion diddorol, a ffont bren unigryw.
Wedi’i chlymu o dan fainc ger y ffont mae carreg grwn ryfedd, o’r enw Maen Camp . Roedd y garreg yn rhan o’r ffair bentref flynyddol ar Ddydd Gwyl Mihangel (29 Medi), pan fyddai cystadleuydd yn ceisio taflu’r garreg yn ôl dros eu pennau i weld pwy fyddai’n cipio teitl pencampwr y pentref. Adfywiwyd hen draddodiad fel rhan o’r dathlu noddwr yr eglwys .
